About the Campaign

The Chiswick W4 Rail Noise Campaign is a grassroots effort by residents affected by intense wheel-squeal noise from trains negotiating tight curves near Chiswick, West London. The high-pitched metallic screech penetrates homes day and night, disrupting sleep, concentration, and quality of life.

We are calling on Network Rail — which owns and maintains the track infrastructure — to assess noise levels, install proven mitigation measures (rail-dampers, rail-grinding, curve lubrication), and commit to a clear timeline for relief.

The campaign is organised by AP Dasgupta and fellow residents. We are not affiliated with any political party.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is wheel-squeal?

Wheel-squeal is a high-pitched noise caused by train wheels sliding laterally across the rail on tight curves. The steel-on-steel contact creates an intense screech that can exceed 100 dB — louder than a chainsaw at close range.

Who is responsible for fixing this?

Network Rail owns and maintains the track and is responsible for noise mitigation on its infrastructure. Train Operating Companies (TOCs) run the services but have limited control over track-generated noise.

What solutions exist?

Rail-dampers (tuned absorbers bolted to the rail), top-of-rail friction modifiers (curve lubrication), and regular rail-grinding are all proven, widely-used techniques. Many European railways deploy them as standard on tight curves near residential areas.
